Hans G. Herold was born in Munich, Germany, in 1925. While still in Munich, he had some art training from E. Maxon. In 1957, he emigrated to Canada, settling in Saskatoon. He attended art classes under Nik Seminoff from 1958 to 1959. For the next two years, he spent time in Uranium City painting northern scenes and conducting an art club at the Gunner Mining Community. Back in Saskatoon, he continued his art practice and taught private classes. He attended the Emma Lake workshops in the summers of 1983 and 1984. In 1988, he moved to Vancouver Island.
