Walter Joseph Phillips - An Essay in Woodcuts - Ten woodcuts put together in a portfolio by Thomas Nelson & Sons Ltd., 1930

After learning etching from Cyril Barraud, he began making etchings and woodblock prints. later, he travelled to England where he studied printmaking under several teachers, including Y. Urushibara. In 1940, he began to teach at the Banff Summer School and, in 1941, moved to Calgary to take a job at the Institute of Technology and Art. He was the author of The Technique of the Colour Woodcut, wrote articles for various publications, and illustrated numerous books. He was awarded many honours and prizes, including an honorary LLD from the University of Alberta in 1960. He was an active member of the Canadian art community and many art organizations including the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour, the Society of Canadian Painters, and the Royal Canadian Academy. In 1960, he moved to Victoria where he died in 1963.
