Joseph Archibald Browne was born in Liverpool, England, in 1864, and came to Canada in 1888. Although mainly self taught, he had some training with Macaulay Stevenson in Scotland and William Cruickshank in Toronto. Active in the art community, he was a founding member of the Canadian Art Club and was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy in 1915. He moved to Montreal in 1923 and later, in 1927, to Lancaster, Ontario, where he painted the surrounding countryside. He died in Cornwall, Ontario, in 1948.
