 Andreas Christian Gottfreid Lapine was born in Riga Province, Russia, in 1866. He began his studies in Riga with Professor Rose, a Russian academician, and later travelled with him to London and Paris. In Paris, he was associated with Jose Weiss, then studied at the Amsterdam Academy under Augustus Allebe. After coming to Canada in 1907, he spent a short time farming in Manitoba before moving to Toronto. He became an Associate of the Royal Canadian Academy and a member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour. He died at Minden, Ontario, in 1952.
