Loma Russell was born in Saskatoon in 1933. In 1956, she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a BSc and in further studies in the 1960s, majored in Psychology and Art. In addition, she holds a Professional "A" teaching certificate. She taught art in Saskatoon elementary and secondary schools, various community organizations, and gave private lessons. In 1971, she was a founding member of the Shoestring Gallery. From 1972 to 1976, she was the Education Officer at the Mendel Art Gallery and served as a consultant to the Saskatchewan Teacher's Federation and the Saskatchewan Society for Education through Art. She has had many group and solo exhibitions and has been awarded four Saskatchewan Arts Board Grants. She did this piece under her then-married name of Loma Cutting, but has since gone back to her maiden name of Russell. She now lives in Saskatoon.
