Allen Sapp was born in 1928 at the Red Pheasant Reserve, near North Battleford, Saskatchewan. He attended the Onion Lake Residential School. His mother died when he was young, and he was raised by his grandmother. Also while very young, he had a serious illness and turned to drawing while recuperating. He has appeared on several national television broadcasts and was the subject of the CBC documentary, By Instinct an Artist. In 197 5, he became a member of the Royal Canadian Academy. He has received the Canadian Order of Merit and the Saskatchewan Order of Merit.
