Mary Hiester Reid was born at Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1854. From 1883 to 1885, she studied at the Pennsylvania Academy in Philadelphia under Thomas Eakins. In 1885, she married artist George A. Reid, and they travelled to Europe for their honeymoon. They returned to Toronto where they continued to paint and gave classes to supplement their incomes. In 1888, they again travelled to Europe where she studied at the Academie Colarossi in Paris under several teachers. Back in Toronto, she taught private classes and summer school at the Ontario College of Art. She and her husband travelled extensively in Canada, the United States and Europe and spent summers at their cabin in tl1e Catskill Mountains. Her favorite subjects were landscapes, still lifes, and interiors. She was a member of the Ontario Society of Art, the Canadian Society of Applied Art and an associate Member of tl1e Royal Canadian Academy. She died in Toronto in 1921.
