Sir Edmund Wyly Grier was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1862, came to Canada in 1876, and later moved to London, England. He studied at the Slade School in London, the Scoula Libera in Rome and at Academie Julian in Paris. From 1886 to 1895, he exhibited several times at the Royal A~ademy. Returning to Canada in 1891, he established a studio specializing in portraits. Over the years he was to paint the portraits of many prominent figures. He was the recipient of a number of honors including a gold medal at the Paris Salon, a silver medal at the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo and, in 1935, he was knighted. He was a member of the Ontario Society of Artists, the Royal Canadian Academy, of which he was the president for ten years, the Canadian Authors' Association, and was a founding member of the Arts and Letters Club. He died in Toronto in 1957.
