Thomas Wilberforce Mitchell was born at Clarksburg, Ontario, in 1879. He moved to Toronto where he studied at the Central Ontario School of Art under William Cruickshank, G.A. Reid, and F.S. Challener. later he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy, Philadelphia, under Alden Weir and Philip Hale. His working life was spent as a commercial artist both for others and as a free lancer. He was a member of the Mahlstick Society, the Canadian Society of Graphic Art, the Arts and Letters Club, the Ontario Society of Artists, and an Associate of the Royal Canadian Academy. In 1938, he moved to Barrie, Ontario, where he lived until his death in 1958.
